Print Server 2003 and Vista/Seven

Hello,

How to manage the drivers of differents printers when the server is a
Windows 2003 SP2 and the stations are Vista or Seven. Can I add the right
vista/seven printer in the Windows 203 console to realize an automatic
connection of many printers via vbs under vista/seven as I do with Windows
XP.

operating systems beyond what was out when 2003 was out. This means
anything Vista or 7 or newer aren't naturally known as operating
systems, so the checkboxes and the ability to install for those systems
aren't available.

I haven't tried this, and when connecting to a 2003 box from Vista, I just
install the necessary drivers if the XP drivers don't work.

the newer OS.

Copy the new drivers to your print server, open Printers and Faxes, choose
File, Server properties, Drivers tab and Add button, choose the correct architecture
and add the vista/windows 7 print drivers there to the server. Then check
out it you are able to add the driver.

Windows 7 print drivers are compatible with Server 2003 drivers.
Specifically the print drivers are user mode drivers and the spooler marks
these as version 3 drivers. The newer drivers may take a dependency on an
updated version of unidrv.dll or pscript5.dll but these files would be
copied to the Server 2003 machine when adding the newer drivers to the
machine.

The portion of the driver that will be deprecated is the package portion of
the print driver since Server 2003 does not support this feature. Print
Driver Isolation is also unsupported until the server is Server 2008 R2.

So if i understand you correct 2003 drivers can be used for Windows 7? In
my test with HP 4650 this doesn't work. Even if the driver was also listed
as 2003/XP/Vista compatible.

Yes but I will only confirm the drivers that ship on the Win2k3 Server CD.
If the vendor did not ship them with Server 2003, they can write all sorts
of functions that are not supported later.

I use Server 2003 drivers on several Server 2008 print servers SPECIFICALLY
when the Server 2008 version driver complains that it is not installed. HP
has a work around but when the old stuff just works without modifying the
registry, I'll go with the old driver.

No problem. HP's setup program performs a version check but the check fails
since it does not know about Windows 7 OS version.
