Problems with backing up DHCP database

yaro137

I'm using Backup Exec 9.0 on one of our servers and at some point it
started throwing exceptions on backing up bits of DHCP and WINS
database.

Unable to open the item C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\db
\SYMANTECGHOST.DB - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\j50.log - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\j50.log - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\wins.mdb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb - skipped.

File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb
File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\j50.log
File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb
File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\wins\j50.log
File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\wins\wins.mdb
File is in use : C:\WINNT\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb

It runs on Windows 2k Server SP4 and is scheduled to backup at 11PM.

Any idea what can be causing that?

Hello yaro137,

You have to use AOFO from BackupExec or stop the DHCP and WINS service to
free the databases in use.

You need licenses for AOFO don't you otherwise it's greyed out ? I'll
try scheduling a stop of those services and see how that works. Thanks

Hello yaro137,

Correct, AOFO requires an additional license.

What is your setting on the job that backs up this server in regards to how
it handles the locking of files?

In "Open file backup when Advanced Open File Option is not used" I've
got "with a lock" checked. My yesterdays backup went better than
before when WINS and DHCP were stopped but still it skips the DHCP
part saying:
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\j50.log - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb - skipped.

The dhcp database should automatically back up itself regularly under
c:\windows\system32\dhcp\backup\new.

As long as BE is backing that up you should be ok.
