A Windows 2003 server that has been running fine for 3 years. Suddenly no login prompt locally. After reboot, also cannot access remotely. Just the splash screen is displayed. But people can access their files fine.

Re: Server 2003 and Missing Logon Prompt
Okay here is the latest on this issue:
I have tried several of the items above:
- The security policy for CTRL-ALT-DEL - no difference
- Logging off of the computer when i do have a desktop works
normally. I log off and can log back on several times...no problems
- I haven't tried the autologin changes within the registry, yet
(because of the security issue but if this happens again, which I
suspect it will, i will do this to remove the need to pressing the
power button to restart my MAIN server assuming this will actually
work.)
However, here is something I have noticed, rebooting works but heres
the catch:
Starting from the server with a logon screen, everything normal.
1st reboot - logon screen is missing but remote access (RDP) to server
works
2nd reboot - logon screen is missing and remote access does NOT work
3rd reboot - logon screen appears
4th reboot - logon screen is missing but remote access (RDP) to server
works
5th reboot - logon screen is missing and remote access does NOT work
6th reboot - logon screen appears
During each of the above reboots: all sever access IS working (i.e.
people can work, exchange works, shares work, etc...) I can even
manage the server remotely (not RDP). Now this has been the pattern
on 2 occassions. I do not want to continue to test the pattern,
because i'm not usually in the practice of pressing the power button
to turn the server off which is what I have to do after the 2nd time.
I have tried remote shutdown of the server....this does not appear to
be working either..i'm simply left to pressing the power button
Let me summarize the situation:
The rebooting of our server usually happens remotely (we apply
critical updates during the day and then log in remotely that evening
to reboot)
Remotely, after the reboot, we can verify that everything is working
(which makes sense considering the above pattern we have discovered)
The next morning, when sitting in front of the server, we have NO
login screen, but EVERYTHING is working (Exchange, Shares, etc...)
Only after 2 more reboots do I get my login screen back, I have
verified this 2x on two different occassions. (now this could just be
a fluke but the pattern was the same)
The only things I have yet to try:
- Booting into safe mode multiple times to see if the pattern
continues
- Rebooting the server locally multiple times to see if the pattern is
the result of remotely rebooting
The main reason for reposting is to see if anyone else has seen this
and found the resolution.
Thanks for everyones input and thoughts...they are much appreciated.
