Upgrading help....

So if you see my specs, you can see what I run right now. I am looking
to upgrade to a phenom 2 x4 955. see link. for specs

I also am looking to continue using my 9800GTX+ for the time being with
the option to go double or triple cards in the future. I have noticed
that there are not many options for motherboards with the am3 socket
style and SLI capabiltiy. except for this board...

Likely not. A 910w to 1200w PS is more appropriate, assuming that you will
likely go to 275 or 295 based video card(s) in the not to distant future.
Adequate cooling may be an issue with two or three SLI video cards.
The 2x GPU cards are looking better as the price drops. ASUS also has an
M4A79 DLX MBD (940pin)that uses DDR2 memory. Unfortunately it is Crossfire
not SLI.

Currently playing with one (AMD 955 processor, M4A79, HD4890 925 Mhz GPU,
DDR5 1050Mhz 1G memory.) Win 7 RTM
The single HD4890 shows 7.7 on the Win 7 graphics preformance scale

156W 9800GTX (recommended amount by Nvidia)
125W AMD Phenom II 955 CPU
30W 12 USB ports @ 0.5 amp = 6.0 amp // amp x volts = watts // 6A x 5V
= 30W
15W hard drive x how many you have installed.
20W DVD-RW drive (under maximum load, writing)
24W for motherboard and memory (guessing)

Total: 360W (This is maximum with padding for margin of safety and would not
reflect the amount in actual use, which should be a lot lower)

You generally aren't going to be using every USB port and unlikely they will
all be pulling 0.5 amp which is the max any USB device should be using.

Video games, GPU will be loaded with work but CPU won't be, unless you are
doing video conversion in the background.

I'm thinking like 150-175W total for normal use like web browsing, about
200W, if you're hard core gaming. Keep in mind all the numbers like 156W
and 125W are padded. That's under absolute maximum load + extra for margin
of safety.

Not to mention all the power saving features built in and lot of system
either being idle or not in use, you should be more than OK with even with a
250W power supply with your rig.

Hard drives need most power at spin up, but I'm thinking GPU and CPU aren't
running at full load so you should have plenty of power at startup. Also
some hard drives like the WD Caviar Green have staggered spin up if you have
more than one hard drive which prevents them from demanding power from the
power supply all at once.

I took a look at various hard drives and they seem to operate in the range
of about 8-12W for desktop 3.5" HHD. They will give you slightly different
numbers depending on selling point ("green" or environment-friendly
literature might give lower power consumption quote compared to recommended
operating quote... which reflect what the writer feels the amount of power
necessary for proper operating + a little more to error on the side of
having more than sufficient power.)

In my opinion, fully loaded with 3 9800GTX, I think even 500W would be more
than sufficient.
