Hello,
I have some questions about NTP and time-sync.
I have the following environment :
Win2003 AD
one DC (PDC Emulator\PDCe) does sync with a NTP server in the internet
second Domaincontroller (DC2)
XP Clients
W2K Clients
Memberservers
Now I wonder what machines in the LAN are NTP servers, what machines are a
NTP clients and what protocols are used to sync time in the LAN between
XP\W2K workstations, DCs, memberservers and the PDCe
My questions are :
1. The XP\W2K workstations :
Where do they get their time from? I think from the authenticating DC?
Are the workstations NTP clients ? If they are : then all DCs are NTP
servers? (see 3.)
On a XP client I start:
w32tm /monitor
DC2[10.1.0.68]:
ICMP: 0ms delay.
NTP: -0.0312770s offset from PDCe
RefID: PDCe [10.1.0.49]
PDCe *** PDC *** [10.1.0.49]:
ICMP: 0ms delay.
NTP: +0.0000000s offset from PDCe
RefID: ptbtime1.ptb.de [192.53.103.108]
What does this output mean?
That DC2 and PDCe are both NTP Servers ? (see 3.)
That this XP machine is a NTP Client and uses NTP to connect to PDCe *and*
to DC2 ?
Where does this XP client get its time from?
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters is "NT5DS"
Since this value is "NT5DS" - and not "NTP" - I think the XP machine is not
a NTP client ?
2. Is the PDCe both: a NTP server and a NTP client ?
Since the PDCe connects to a NTP-Server on the internet I think the PDCe is
a NTP client.
But is the PDCe a NTP Server, too?
Who gets its time from the PDCe ? The other DCs ?
if so:
-how often do the other DCs sync their time with the PDCe?
-Using NTP?
3. Is DC2 a NTP server?
Are all domaincontrollers NTP servers?
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters is "NTP"
Since this value is "NTP" - I think DC2 is NTP server ?
Or is DC2 (only) a NTP-client connecting to the PDCe ?
DC2 will sync its time with all XP\W2K workstations that authenticate
against it?
Using which protokoll ? NTP ?
4. Poll intervall:
I have read that XP clients will sync their time automatically with the DC
that has authenticated them - but how often will this happen?
So how can I find out how often the XP\W2K workstations and the
DCs\Memberservers are contacing their timeserver?
Does this happen automatically?
thank you
Heinz
