Files server upgrade

Our company has a Windows 2003 file server standard edition. This server is
part of a domain. What I need to do is to move all of the information
including the file security structure (Permissions and share) into a new
server. The new server is Windows 2008 standard. The most important part of
this project is to be sure we keep the same server name so that all of our
UNC remains the same and seamless to the user.

How can I accomplish this?

Any comments or suggestions please advice.

Hello DMI,

With a domain member server you can use robocopy from the 2008 server(make
it also domain member before) and mirror all data to the new machine. After
that rename the old one to whatever name and rename the 2008 to the now free
name fomr the old one.

Make SURE to wait after each renaming that replication has occured to all
DCs and that all DNS servers also have the correct records, then go on with
the next rename.

At the end you can remove the now old server from the domain.
