Can someone send me a link describing Microsoft's policy on supporting 2008
R2 on vSphere 4?

Hello Paul,

I think you have to post this to VMWare newsgroups not here. They are the
selling company and have to provide the information if windows server 2008
R2 is supported on there OS.
