Do you loose the admin TS license whenin applicztion mode with Device CALs

T

Tony Vrolyk

We have taken over a client with Windows 2003 with TS in application mode
that is in need of additional TS device CALs and we need to know if we
should count devices where we login to administer the server. I can see
devices listed in the licensing manager that I know were only used to login
as administrator so it would seem we need to count those as well. However I
did not see the PC I was connected from at the time so I am bit confused. I
read the TS licensing documentation and couldn't find anything that
explicityly said either way that you loose the admin licenses or not.

I would appreciate some enlightenment.

Thanks
Tony

If you are always managing the TSs from the same device, it will indeed grab
a license. Keep in mind if you use one device for a couple weeks and never
again, that license goes back to the pool after up to 89 days so you actually
do not 'lose' that license.

Re: Do you loose the admin TS license whenin applicztion mode with Dev

You don't lose the token permanently, but you do lose those tokens for a
time which can take up a token that is intended for a 'real' client should
that client's temp token expire and there are no others available.
Especially if you administer the server from multiple devices. Even if you
try to only administer from one remote location there is always the
possibilty of accidentally connecting in from a different device and once
the session is established there is no way to invalidate the token.

And you do loose the two built-in administrative TS licenses, don't you? TS
has no way of differentiating between an 'application sharing' user and an
'administrator' user at least from a licensing perspective - correct?

Correct. Well when a client needs a license you can always get rid of
the temporary, expired license that is on their PC. So really at the end
you should have no issues whatsoever.

For Administrators you can use /admin switch. I.e. mstsc /admin

this won't consume a CAL.

Hope that helps!

Thank you. I didn't know that switch existed and will perfectly deal with
the situation.

Re: Do you loose the admin TS license whenin applicztion mode with

Oh my bad not mentioning it. If connecting using older clients the switch is
actually /console. /admin is for the newer ones/newer servers.
But there is a catch here. You are limited to two connections over RDP plus
the console itself.
I know many places where they require more than 2 admins connected so in
this case this would not work at all.
Also be careful as if you connect using this switch and your connection
drops and remains active on the TS, as soon as you reach the two active
connections limit you will NOT be able to connect again remotely. I have seen
people locked out several times.
Make sure you set timeouts accordingly to avoid locking yourself up.
Without the switch this problem does NOT happen of course.
