NTFS modify but not delete

Hello

I want to security group "A" to be able to read, write, etc...but not
delete. They should be able to create folders, create files, but not
delete (I think renaming a folder constitutes deleting). Anyway,
modify is the closest I get to being able to do what I want it to do,
but alas they can delete.

Thanks

Look into the Special Permissions (Advanced settings).

Hi John, thanks for the quick reply. I looked at the ACLs that make
up the NTFS permissions (advanced tab), but can't seem to get the
right combination. If I uncheck delete subfiles and files, and
uncheck delete I can't rename folders. I guess if there is no other
way I may have to create the folders ahead of time. I want each
member of the security group to create folders.

Hello wuzzle,

Modifying a file or folder requires a delete option. During change of the
name you delete the old file and create a new one, even if you don't see
that step.

Hi Meinof, yes I understand that. My comment from earlier

"They should be able to create folders, create files, but not
delete (I think renaming a folder constitutes deleting)".

So you are saying that what I want is not possible using ntfs and ACLs?

I figured it out. Thanks for all who responded.

Remember

Creating a file/folder makes you the OWNER.
the owner has always the right to change the permissions
if you can change the permissions you can give yourself F/C
Hence you can delete.

Windows does not support what you want. It would require a "default owner" for
new files/folder before it could do this.

I was going to suggest to select the drop down box choosing parent and no
child folders, etc. Curious, what did you select to figure it out? Share so
all can benefit that find this thread in an internet search, please.
