Upgrade painlessly from w2008std to 2008R2std...?

Jake

Hi,

I consider to upgrade two of our domain controllers to benefit from R2's
DFS clustering services.

Would the upgrade be painless, or should I expect a lot of tweaking and
reconfiguration?

Hello Jake,

I would not cluster Domain controllers, doesn't matter which OS version you
use. You can but follow this way
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281662

Additional i suggest to use the following NG:
microsoft.public.windows.server.clustering

And this forum:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums...stering/threads

I just need to cluster a few fileshares, so that shouldn't be any
problem, but I also wanted to know if a (general) upgrade from 2008 std
to 2008R2 std would be painless or if there are many pitfalls...

Hello Jake,

If you use only the RTM versions and no RC/BETA you can do it inplace, whereas
i prefer always a clean install for a new OS version.

Check this one for known problems:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/973422

And here some additional info:

Me too, but I installed w2008 from scratch on these two 10 days ago,so
it should be near-as clean (except AD, DNS etc which were migrated :)

I hoped that perhaps I could just upgrade a disconnected domain
controller without denoting / promoting it, (just let the R2 installer
do its work, then reconnect and restart) or wouldn't taking a shortcut
like that be an option..?

Hello Jake,

No need for disconnecting, keep in mind for a 2008 R2 DC you have to upgrade
the schema according to:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...728(WS.10).aspx

Just check out the upgrade guide posted before.

Depending on the OS architecture use adprep32.exe (32bit) or adprep.exe (64bit).

Thanks again.

Another issue comes to my mind:

If I recall correctly R2 is 64bit only. We currently run win2008std in
32bit.

What else do we need to be aware of when jumping from 32bit to 64bit in
this case? New drivers? What else...?

Hello Jake,

In-place upgrade from 32bit to 64bit is not possible, it requires a reinstall.

For drivers you have to check the hardware vendor website before. But as
far as i realized until now there is a really good driver support included
within 2008 R2.

Other problems related to the OS architectur i didn't heard about until now.
