Beware of Adobe Reader 9

E

Emrys Davies

I have Win7 , WLM and Adobe Reader 8

I updated to Adobe Reader 9.3 and found that YouTube was dead so I did a

Restore Point and found that the update was the baddie. Now, with that

gone, all is well.

I didn't have that same problem, but I got real tired real quick of Adobe

trying almost daily to look for updates, even though I set it not to in the

preferences/options. I even deleted the registry /Run entry, and that would

be back within a day or two. I uninstalled Reader and instead went with

PDF-Xchange Viewer, a freebie from here:

http://www.docu-track.com/product/downloads . It's quick, has a smaller

footprint, and hasn't given me a warning for anything since installation.

I dumped Adobe Reader a long time ago....

One reason was that it constantly wants to check for updates,

even though you tell it not to.

The other, was it is a big-bloated pig. It takes longer for

Adobe Reader to just initialize in a browser, than it does to

d/l the entire PDF and open it and read a couple pages using

Foxit Reader.

Glad I posted. I was getting annoyed with Adobe 8 and its reminders so on

reading your post I got rid of it and, following your advice, I downloaded

PDF-Xchange Viewer. Thanks for that.

You're welcome. I hope you like it as much as I do. Another freebie I use is

PDF Creator http://www.pdfforge.org/ . It creates a "printer" that you use

to create a PDF from a current document, scan, or anything that can be

printed.

I also dislike The Adobe PDF reader ...I'm still using v 6 (yes version six)

despite its regular demands for updates, as my in Browser PDF viewer..

still does the job in both FIREFOX & I.E. .

Will the recommended PDF-XChange Viewer browser integrate & do all the

PDF view things as the Adobe ???

If you click on a pdf link in a web page, it'll open like Adobe did, if

that's what you mean.

For quite a few years I've been putting the Cute PDF "Printer" on all

of my systems. It sounds very similar to your choice.

Pretty much the same results, I would say. I've been using PDF Creator for a

while since it was free for commercial use. We used to email a lot of

documents at the company I worked for, and used this for compatibility

reasons a number of companies we dealt with didn't have Office or the same

version as us, and we ran into problems at times until we started using

this. Since Acrobat Reader has always been free, we worked with our

customers to help set them up that way to avoid excess expense for all

concerned. Worked like a champ, and got me a gold star -)

We use this one at work:

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

It's free, simple, and it works. We have MS Office 2007 and Word allows

us to save files as PDFs, so there's no need for cute writer, which I

used for years and loved it!

What do you do when you want to make a PDF from a non-Word file, such as a

form on a web page? Like a receipt from an on-line order or funds

transfer...

For that, I use CutePDF and others - I seem to have a hobby of downloading

PDF programs :)

Admittedly, I have an older version of Office, so I'd need the PDF printer

SW anyway.
