Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification tray to allow removal of Ext HD - Windows XP Pro

In Window XP Pro, when I connect the external HD to my computer, the safely

remove Icon appears in the notification tray. Does this happen with Windows

7 also? Thanks for any help, Sam.

The message will depend on how you have configured the external drive.

It only appears when you have the drive configured to use caching.

This causes a reminder so that you don't lose any data when disconnecting

the external hard drive.

The icon will appear even if caching is NOT enabled, and if I'm not

mistaken, write caching is disabled by default to allow for "quick removal."

I never enable caching on any external drive and still use the "Safely

remove hardware" icon, both in XP and Win7. Less chance of damage/lost data

that way, even if it is supposed to be hot pluggable/unpluggable. The extra

5 seconds of insurance certainly can't hurt, IMHO.
