Microsoft Works

[Ed Meza]

When trying to access Microsoft Works, version 5.0 on Windows ME, I get a
message that reads: "A file is missing so Microsoft Works cannot run.
Please reinstall Microsoft Works."
This software was functional and it came pre-installed when I acquired the
computer. I do not have a software disc to reinstall it.
Any ideas on how to make it work?
I have tried system restore and I still get the same message.

Ed,

May not be relevant since the error message is somewhat different. MS
KB279291 "Works 2000 Error Message: Works Cannot Access One or More
Required Files" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=279291).

Although I have the recovery discs which came with my HP Pavilion 6745C, I
also know that the install files are in the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder
on my HDD. Assuming that they weren't removed from your computer to gain
more disc space, I'd look there. Don't know how to build a set of recovery
discs from those files, though.

Hi Ed!

I had a similar problem with MS Works 7.0 on Win XP SP2 Home Edition.

My solution was to open the "Add/Change Programs" feature in the Control
Panel, find the listing for MS Works, and click on the "Change" - not the
"Remove" button" This will open an installation wizard that will give you
the option to "Remove", "Reinstall", or "Customize" the MS Works
installation.

Here I chose "Reinstall", and it did a reinstall of MS Works, and afterwards
I no longer received the missing file error message, and MS Works, well,
worked <g>.

You may want to give this a go as an easy way to possibly remedy your
problem.

Mike, the article you provided is pertinent. However, I still have the
problem of not having an installation disc.
Helmsman, no, the window mesage that appears does not tell you which file(s)
are missing or corrupted....just *some file(s) may be missing or corrupted &
to reinstall Works.*
Norman, even if most of the files are where you say they are, I really don't
know which one is missing - or worse, corrupted. I have not deleted files to
gain space.
An O.J. I thought I'd get lucky with your instructions through Add/Remove
Programs, however my system's wizard did not give me the options to remove,
reinstall or customize the MS Works installation. The wizard just asked to
insert installation disc. Again, I'm running Windows ME, Microsoft Works is
version 5.0.
Questions....
1) How about removing the whole program. Is it then possible to
re-installing from a link? Or an installation disc is a must?
2) How about a better program than MS Works suitable to Windows Millennium?

Can't help you with your WORKS problem, although I would have thought that
SFC might have helped, you might be interested in looking at OPEN OFFICE, as
a replacement office suite. It's free and it competes fairly well with
Microsoft Office. It's been a few years since we had it on our Windows Me
laptop, but if I recall, the only problem was its large footprint.....the
office suite includes a spreadsheet, word processor, data base, a power
point type presentation, and I think a couple of others. Don't know if it's
still the same but when we used it, you had to install the whole suite.
