explorer.exe seems to run overtime

On my Win2000 P4 2.4 1gb RAM computer, sometimes things take much longer

than they should, like bringing up a browse menu (to save a file to), or

switching to the desktop and taking forever for the desktop icons to fill

in. Just now, two minutes after closing Firefox and another program(after

they had disappeared from the Task Manager), I noticed that explorer.exe was

using 65-80% or cpu power. I'm wondering if this is normal, or indicative

or a problem that I might be able to fix. Any ideas about this?
