allow ms to monitor user activities or be denies access

T

Tracey

Is there a way to disable "monitor user activities on this computer"

without denying my access to use the computer I purchased?

Issue explained below.

Is there a registry entry that can be added/deleted/modified to address

this issue?

Any help resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Tracey

I have just re-installed Windows 2000 and applied the critical updates.

I have also re-installed Zone Alarm (firewall).

I will eventually get a warning message from Zone Alarm (shortly after

launching the applicable program):

"{Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer/Outlook Express} is attempting to

monitor user activities on this computer.

If allowed it may track or log keystrokes (user input), mouse

movements/clicks, web sites visited and other user behaviors."

Via the firewall options, I can Allow, Permanently Deny, or Deny for the

Current Session.

If I deny this activity, I will shortly there after be denied access to

(most/all) programs and documents even when logged on as the Administrator.

One of these may help.

Yes, if you disallow programs to monitor keystrokes or mouse

movements or mouse button clicks, then all programs that use

keyboard or mouse (ie, all programs, and the operating system

itself as well) will be disabled. This might be a good choice

for programs that take no input (such as automated background

daemons). But for programs that involve any input at all from

keyboard or mouse, you must allow that input, if you want the

program to work. For example, what good is a word processor

that can't process words? Or a browser that can't surf the web?

The programs you list (Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer,

Outlook Express) all need to "monitor user activities including

keystrokes and mouse movements", as Zone Alarm phrases it.

Of course they should be allowed to do that.

Now, if Zone Alarm tells you that a program you don't recognize

(especially if it has no visible window) is trying to monitor

keyboard and mouse, then you may have a keylogger trojan, so

you should DISALLOW that program from monitoring keyboard or

mouse, and from connecting to the Internet. That's the kind

of thing Zone Alarm was build to combat.

As to what programs *DO WITH* mouse clicks, keystrokes, URLs

you visit, etc, differs with each program. Some log that data

and some don't. Some are configuragle, some aren't. Some

tell you up front that they log stuff, while others hide the

fact.

The programs you list *DO* log things. Outlook Express keeps

copies of all incoming and outgoing emails in dbx files.

Internet explorer keeps a "history" of all web sites you visit.

Windows Explorer tracks "recently used files" that you've

accessed on your computer. These things are controllable to a

certain extent. You can limit (or turn-off) history in Internet

Explorer. You can turn-off saving copies of sent emails in

Outlook Express. Etc. Look in the Settings for each such

program you run.
