How do I change "flash9d.ocx" to "flash10e.ocx" in registry?

Ok, so recently my Macromedia -- er, actually, Adobe now -- Flash

updated itself from version 9 to version 10. No big deal, all

automatically done in background.

BUT, when I ran Norton WinDoctor today, looking for any registry

anomalies, as part of routine maintainance, it found that one

registry entry had a wrong value which could NOT be fixed.

So I fired up regedit.exe and tried to edit the entry manually, but

when I pressed "Ok", I got "Edit failed. Error writing new data."

The registry key in question is:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer32

The bogus value and data are:

(Default) = C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx

(The correct data would be "Flash10e.ocx" in place of "Flash9d.ocx".)

I tried restarting Windows in safe mode, but I got the same problem:

"edit failed, error writing new data".

So, how do I correct this? Much obliged if anyone could shed some light.

Use the command

cacls flash9d.ocx /e /r everyone

to allow deletion.

Right-click on the registry key and select "Permissions" and grant

yourself permissions to edit registry values.

Hmmm.

In Regedit.exe , i'm not seeing "Permissions" when I

right-click keys or values. I see Exand, New, Find,

Delete, Rename, Copy Key Name.

In RegEdt32.exe , I'm not even seeing menus when I

right-click keys or values nothing happens at all.

What program are you using that gives "Permissions"

on right-click?

Deletion of what? The file you mention doesn't exist,

so I can't delete it.

And if it *did* exist, I wouldn't be having the problem

I described in my post. Think about it.

Different issue. That person was having problems deleting

a file.

I'm not having a problem deleting a file I'm having a problem

editing a registry entry.

I need to update this registry value:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer32

(Default) = C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx

I need to change "Flash9d.ocx" to "Flash10e.ocx".

But every time I try, I get this error message box:

Title bar:

Error Editing Value

Message:

Cannot edit: Error writing the value's new contents.

So, what's up with that? How do I edit this?

Ok, while exact action doesn't work in either of my registry

editors, I found that my regedit32.exe does have a whole menu

devoted to security. I used that to reset permissions and

fix the broken entry. So your advice got me going in the

right direction thanks.
