Arthur: All my life I've had this strange feeling that there's

something big and sinister going on in the world.

Slartibartfast: No, that's perfectly normal paranoia. Everyone in the

universe gets that.

in the Documents and Settings folder, there are several subfolders

under Administrator, Defaut User, etc. called "Recent". Every frikkin

thing I do on the computer is recorded in there. If I had other

people using this computer, I'd be concerned about privacy, but I only

use it myself. Yet, I really want to shut off that tracking if it's

possible. If for no other reason, everytime I search for a file or

folder, those useless junk links show up if they match the search.

Not to mention just more useless clutter filling my hard drive. I see

no purpose for this at all, at least not for my needs.

Is there a way to permanently disable this?

Thanks

Not sure, but I use MRU (Most Recently Used) Blaster. It is a free program

and works great. Google for it.

I went to this site. IT tells me to open regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

Explorer]

When I get to the Policies part, there is NO entry listed as

"Explorer". Either I have a different version of Win2K (the last

upgrade is what I have), or that website is full of crap, and just

wants to sell their software.....

Er, or:

That key was not needed.

IOW, windows uses a default value when a key is not present.

I finally figured it out. I had to ADD that key.

It works great, No more crap in the recent folder.

I never did that before, but I gave it a shot after backing up my

registry.

.... OR, the key, value, and data give would work as advertised,

if you were to create it.

If something that needs to be in the registry is not there, that's

usually a good indicator that the appropriate action would be

for you to PUT it there. Be assertive. (I see, on reading forward

in this thread, that you sort of discovered that for yourself

but I decided to say it outright, as a general concept.)

Caveat: If you do a lot of manual registry edits, it's best to

have your Windows 2000 install CD on hand, and practice using the

Recovery Console, and be aware that you can revert your system

hive, if necessary, to "last known good configuration" by

going into C:\WINNT\system32\config, renaming "SYSTEM" to

"SYSTEM.DAMAGED", and copying "SYSTEM.ALT" to "SYSTEM". You can

often restore a system with a registry that's unbootably-damaged

to operational status that way. Print this paragraph on paper

and put it in your safe-deposit box it can save untold heartache.
