I'm trying to post to this newsgroup. Sometimes I'm successsful and
sometimes not, but mostly not. The only rhyme or reason to it seems to be
that if I include a URL, long or short, the post is blocked, either by
Verizon's servers, which are famous for blocking overseas email, or
news.microsoft.com's. Last post here for now - don't need the aggravation.

Can you post through a free or paid Hotmail (aka Live) Microsoft email
account while using Internet Explorer 6? I am posting right now using
Windows 98SE and a paid yearly Hotmail (Live) email account. That is how I
now post and I like it even better than the newsreaders like Outlook Express
and Thunderbird newsreaders. It is worth $19.95 to me for no ads in the
Passport account and the other benefits that a paid email account from
Microsoft gives you.

Thank your lucky stars you're not hooked up to a lie detecter gizmo. BTW, a
friend of mine uses XP because that's what came loaded on his ebay ThinkPad,
and that's the closest I've come to it. All your 98 problems go away with
W2K.*. Why, I can even print and watch a movie at the same time now.

I'm using a different news-service but for the last couple of
months i'm in the same predicament. I tested the URL-hypothesis
but that is not it for me .. it seems to bee the size of the post
that are the limit for me, some timing issue connecting to the
server.

I don't know what that could be. Is there any error message? The only
item relating to size I can quickly think of is at...
What is in the "Break apart messages larger than" box? Mine is set at 60
KB, but the item is unchecked anyhow. So, I guess mine would not break
apart.
Here is its blurb... "Specifies to break up large messages, so that each
part is smaller than the file size indicated. Some older servers cannot
handle messages larger than 64 kilobytes (KB). By breaking large
messages into smaller messages, you ensure that the messages are
transmitted and received correctly."

Using Thunderbird i get two messages when sending a message
fails. The first 'Send Message Error' with possible causes and
suggestions '.. unavailable or being refused .. please verify ..
settings ..', then a second 'Alert' simply stating 'Connection to
sever %news-server% timed out.'.

My problem is when i try to send (large/long) Usenet messages via
my regular news service provider (NSP), not via msnews.microsoft.com.
So therefor, eventually, did i change and post using
msnews.microsoft.com to finally being able to finish up our
'Avast! false alarm ...' thread. But i read, and occasionally
post to, newsgroups outside of the 'microsoft.*' hierarchy not
carried there.

I've tried different news-clients, same problem, and i've
[finally] updated to a more current version of Thunderbird, same
problem. But posting to another news-server, like
'msnews.microsoft.com.' with the same settings that fails to my
normal NSP do work (so far) so i /think/ it is a server-side problem.
This post is quite lengthy, and i'll try posting to my normal
NSP's server first, but i think i'll have to repost to another
one to get it out. Now just because i write this it'll probably
work .. well, we'll see.

What is strangest to me at my current knowledge-level is that in
both cases i post using the same outgoing SMTP-server.

I know you also have avast! installed. Here is something of interest,
though it was a different error message (Socket Error: 10061). Can you
access the Properties of "%news-server%"...?...
With reference to the error message when downloading emails - I was
having the same problem. I checked out the account configuration and
realised that one of the settings gets "corrupted" sometimes. The POP
and SMTP settings are always correct (127.0.0.1) but what changes is the
account name:
Instead of being:
email#pop.isp.com
It sometimes changes to:
email#127.0.0.1
That's when the problem arises - and it happens all of a sudden, I check
my email and everything is fine - 15 minutes later I check again and I
get this error message, I the have to go into the account configuration
to re-type the correct info to get it to work. I have Avast installed
for about a week but the problem has only started today.
.......EOQ of AckAck...................
AckAck spoke of the POP3 server Properties. But I have reason to believe
it may also apply to the news server too-- but I don't want to revisit
my own recent horror story! For me, I get to that this way...
...., & the Account Name field is found in the Server tab. Here is my
whole Server tab...
Server tab...
1. Server name: 127.0.0.1
2. This server requires me to log on: Checked
3. Account Name: #msnews.microsoft.com
4. No password.
5. Remember password is checked.
6. Log on using Secure Authentication: Unchecked.
That is what it SHOULD look like after avast! gets hold of it. Avast!
appends that number sign (#) to the front of the name in the Account
Name box, & I do believe it changed the Server Name to what you see
there. That Account name seems to be the same as the News Account name
in the General tab...
HOWEVER, my other account has these names in those fields...
General tab...
1. News Account: terabyteunlimited.com
Server tab...
1. Server name: 127.0.0.1
2. Account name: #terabyteunlimited.com:1198
If that doesn't cure it, maybe report back with all of the Properties
settings in all tabs.

UPDATE...
It is IMPORTANT to CLOSE your mail & news reader(s) after making any
change to those settings! (I haven't found a way to make a change
without having OE open first.) I was getting the SAME OLD HORRIBLE
"Socket error: 10061"-- UNTIL I did close & reopen OE after making a
simple change there!
And THAT could be how I suffered the problem in the first place! I took
an update to avast! (the program-- not just the virus definitions), & I
continued to use OE afterwards. I think I should have shut OE & done the
required reboot!
Subsequently, I did do it that way, & all was well. In avast!'s About
box, I am now... avast! 4.7 Home Edition, Build Sep2007 (4.7.1043).

Thanks for your concern and suggestions PCR. I've read all the
three last posts and checked the link above.
However, i'm using AntiVir not Avast, and it does not have and
proxy-hooks into the E-mail or News-clients i've tested now. Even
so, during testing i deactivated it's on-access guard and i
closed my software firewall, and doing both without any change in
behavior.
I'll have to get around to see if my ISP have any support-person
that knows what Usenet/News is and if they can look into it. When
i first read the Roger Fink post, that i made my followup post
to, it suddenly hit me that my short test-posts that had worked
was without links and my longer content-posts may have had URL's
in them .. but rereading it i now i see that Roger have problems
posting to two different servers while i only have with one .. so
beyond problems to post there were really no similarities .. so i
shouldn't have made my first post to this thread. -/

OK. Those E-Mail & NG settings are tricky to deal with. No matter what
your virus scanner is-- ensure you close E-Mail & NG access apps, after
you make a change to them (if those had to be open to make the change).
Otherwise, you may end up with socket errors!
I guess, as a last recourse-- remove the faulty NG Account & add it
back. Maybe that will get it. In OE, I can do that by R-Clkng the
account in the left pane. Make sure you get its Properties first-- so
that you know what to enter to get it back!
