I had the problem that I could play mpg files up to a point and then wmp12 would end. The point where the viewing stopped was different for different mpg files. I considered this a codec problem and installed c
Codecs - All in One. My mpeg files now play through. However, I have a problem with the seek slider as if I try to move along the video it jumps to the end and stops. So partial success.

are you sure you are having problems with .mpeg files or mpeg2 files? Both
are normally converted into .vob which is DVD format. None of the Windows
Media Players come with that codec. Did you happen to have PowerDVD
installed on your computer, but forgot to reinstall it when you upgraded?
If you did, then just pop in the disk and install it. You'll have no
further problems. If not, download Media Player Classic. It plays
everything. Your last option is to install an outside codec pack such as
KLite Basic. That will allow WMP to decode mpeg's. This should only be a
last resort, though. Inexperienced users can accidentally change all their
file associations is this is installed incorrectly.

What you write is most interesting. Indeed, before doing the upgrade to Win
7 (just an upgrade, not a full install) I had some DVD player installed on
my PC (Was it PowerDVD ? I just cannot remember). And, strangely enough, I
cannot find any trace of this player since I upgraded. All the programs I
had are still there, except that one, so it seems. How come, I wonder ?
Now, before the upgrade, I could read any video file. I have the feeling I
could read them all in Win Media Player V11, but now I am not sure of
anything. Could this PowerDVD have installed a codec pack in WMP to allow
the playing of Mpeg files ?
Do I understand from your message that WMP 12 cannot read any mpeg file?

PowerDVD automatically installs the mpeg codec so you can watch DVD's. Pop
it in and see if PowerDVD is listed. My Dell came with PowerDVD, but when I
formatted it I found out Dell never gave me a disk to reinstall it. I went
with the Klite codec pack.

I had a little trouble following the thread.
The reason that DVD may play when MPEG2 does not maybe related to underlying
architectures. WMP uses many different runtimes to playback media:
directshow, media foundations to name a couple.
I believe WMP uses DirectShow to playback DVD, and may use Media Foundation
to playback MPEG2 ts and ps streams. So that may be the issue.
Can you restate your problem for me?

so, it seems that WMP 12 can play DVDs (with a very good quality, actually),
but cannot play .mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, mpe files.
Thank you very much for your time and kind help.
With Best regards,
Daniel

not play some items that are copyright.
If all else fails for things WMP cannot handle VLC Media Player seems
very good and comes more or less with their own codecs already present.

For the time being that would be better than getting bad codecs from
somewhere.

Hi Charlie,
Thank you so much for your message.
As you suggested I downloaded VLC, which can indeed play all these files.
However, when it comes to playing DVD, I find the difference to be huge:
Windows Media Player is much better.
This why I would have liked to "repair" WMP to see what results I get when
playing mpg/mpeg files.
Is it possible to reinstall it?

Reinstalling WMP is possible in Windows 7 (I think somewhere in Control
Panel - Programs and Features), but it is unlikely that this will fix the
problem. The MPEG codec is not part of WMP, but of the OS itself.
Did you install any codec packs? If so, try removing these. They are no
good and problems like this can occur when installing them.

Hello Tim,
Many thks for your message.
no, I did not install any codec packs.
Your message is interesting. Is there a way to re-install the codecs which
are part of the OS (Windows 7 in my case) ? Or, is there a way to check
whether these codecs are present on my system and, for some reason
"de-activated" ?
thanks again and brgds

As far as I know, there is not a way to reinstall the required codec,
other than reinstalling Windows. Did you try reposting this to the
Windows 7 Music and sound forum, as suggested a few messages earlier?
What's the exact error message you get when trying to play MPEG files?

No, did not have a chance yet to visit that forum.
and no, I do not get any error message. WMP indicates that it opens the media
and then stalls. Nothing happens.
I will pop in to that forum and repost my post.
brgds,
Daniel
