The Microsoft offerings are new (they purchased the technology) and
don't have the highest catch rate in the industry. They may get better,
but are not the best choice for the OP now. Sophos or Trend Micro
(corporate only) are far superior.

Final point, '2Sweet': Lots of folk have given quite a few answers to your
queries recently. My understanding is that they are all volunteers and in no
way connected with Microsoft itself. They might just appreciate a word or
two of thanks for taking the time and trouble to provide you with
information. Just a thought. :)

I would reevaluate the "catch rate" scenario... on trend on personal
experience it only catch "virus"... and kinda shady on rootkits esp,

I understand that you work for Microsoft and so need to put their
products first, but the truth is that Microsoft's antivirus offerings,
whether consumer or corporate, are not the best.

Personally, I would use Sophos.

Antigen uses multiple scanners one of which is Sophos.

If you bothered to advise all thread posters who did not trouble to
acknowledge replies, you might find yourself doing just that with every
spare minute you have with little or no time to much else in these groups -
on second thoughts, may I recommend that you do :)
In any case only 24hrs or so have passed - give the poster a chance - they
may have gone out for the day - it is the weekend - here in the UK and
Singapore.

At proxy server (Gateway Protection), GFI Webmon

Control your Internet users¡¯ browsing habits and monitor downloads in
real-time
Research by IDC shows that up to 40% of employee internet activity is
non-work related. As a network administrator, you need tools to control
employees' web browsing activities and to ensure that any files downloaded
are free of viruses and other malware. GFI WebMonitor for ISA Server boosts
employee productivity by giving you control over what users are browsing and
downloading in real-time.

Internet access control through web categorization and web filtering
GFI WebMonitor comes with WebGrade, a 100% human-reviewed site
categorization database that gives you control over what sites users can
browse and block access to websites in particular categories, such as adult,
online gaming, personal email, P2P, Facebook, Myspace, travel websites and
more. >>

Protect network from viruses, spyware, malware and phishing attacks
GFI WebMonitor allows you to monitor what files employees are downloading,
to block file-types such as mp3s and to scan all files for viruses, spyware
and malware using multiple anti-virus engines. GFI WebMonitor also lowers
the risk of social engineering by blocking access to phishing websites
through the use of an auto-updatable database of phishing URLs. >>

At File server, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for File Server

http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky_anti-virus_file_server
Kaspersky? Anti-Virus for File Server reliably protects servers running
under Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, Linux and Samba from malicious
programs including viruses, Trojans, spyware and more.

Antivirus protection for shared file storage areas is essential, since a
single infected file on the server may infect the workstations of all users
of the resource. Proper protection of the file server not only ensures that
users and their important information are protected, but also eliminates the
danger of viruses making their way into backup copies of files, which may
cause repeated virus outbreaks and other incidents.

At the exchange server, file base antivirus should be Virus Chaser
http://www.viruschaser.com.hk/eng/product/product_feature.asp, the email
service antivirus should be Antigen

At the all other server and client, Virus Chaser Managment Server (VCMS) +

Yup, Antigen (actually isn't that now called forefront?) is a top notch
email scanning product. Damn expensive though.

I was very impressed with the demos. I can't imagine that I'll ever be
deploying it unless the price comes way down :)

I realised that nobody recommend Symantec and Mcafee antivirus solution.
Any reason?

Well I am sure you know about AVG for personal free. They also have what
they call network edtion and you can use it as stand alone or you can
install the network portion of the program and control the program on all
computers in the network from one main machine.

They have this if various sizes that you can purchase. I happen to have
Network Edition for 20 computers. The program seems to work fine. The main
reason I purchased this is Norton and Mcafee both wanted a special version
of the programs they sell if you put them on a computer with Windows 2000
Server or Windows 2003 Server. The network edition of AVG will work on both
those server machines as well as all of my other machines and it ended up
costing me about 23.00 per machine about 2 years ago for a 2 year license on
each of my 20 machines. Had I gone with Norton I would have paid much more.
Now in December I have to renew and it is only going to cost about 12.00 to
13.00 per machine for the next 2 years.

The program has done me well and caught everything except for one virus I
got on one compouter that one of my employees downloaded the same day it
came out before a fix was available.

I use and have, for many years, Symantec Corporate Edition for
workstations and servers - not the group ware or client ware versions.

I have never had a compromised network that used SCE along with our
firewall measures and other security measures.

I have found issues with SCE 10.2 on Windows 2003 Servers where profiles
are corrupted and the server login will hang, requiring a hard reboot.
SCE 10.0 versions don't do this.

I actually bought 20 licenses for my home network.

I've used about everything on the market and I keep returning to SCE,
clients have just over 3000 licenses/installs and it's painless and low
on resources.

Same as Leythos's points here we've been using for the last 6 years
Symantec Corporate for servers and desktops (and Mail Security for
Exchange for the last 3) in a small (35 users) network. One minor
infection.
