Unofficial Win ME SP1?

O

O.J. Newman

Hello:

I recently came upon a site that claims to have an "Unofficial" SP1 for
Windows ME at http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME.

Does anyone know anything about this SP or have any experience with it?

Is it worth trying, or am I more likely to get myself into trouble by
attempting to install this SP?

Also listed are many separate updates, but these may be included as part of
the unofficial SP.

Again, does anyone know anything about these?

Thanks in advance.

O.J.

P.S. I also seem to recall seeing another unofficial Win ME SP that was a
collection of all of the official Win ME updates released by Microsoft.

Does anyone know anything about this SP or where I might be able to find it?

It sounds easier than going to the Microsoft update site and downloading all
of the official updates individually.

I haven't checked, and doubt that I will be doing so, but all I would
expect any third party SP1 to be is a roll-up of the various updates for
Win Me that can otherwise be downloaded and installed from the Windows
Update site. A bit like the Microsoft Security Update CD (now withdrawn)
that was released in January 2005 and did the same thing as well as
upgrading IE to IE6 SP1 (if not previously installed) and upgrading WMP to
WMP9 (if not previously installed). The unofficial SP1 might include some
Microsoft Win Me hotfixes that were not made generally available and only
available from Microsoft after having phoning PSS and outlining a specific
problem that was documented in a Knowledge Base article. In such cases I
wouldn't normally advise a user to install such hotfixes unless they are
experiencing the problem outlined in the associated Knowledge Base
article.

Personally if your PC is fully patched and running well I wouldn't bother
with such a site unless you see some third party application that adds
functionality to your system that it doesn't already have and that you
feel you might want to use.

Various contributors including Shane Beeston and Gary Terhune have
prepared such CDs.

Though I certainly cannot vouch for that unofficial SP...
I have used them before and have not had the slightest problems. Someoene
merely took a bunch of official updates
and rolled them into one package to save some time .

I still would *of course* be sure your data is backed up before giving it a
try...
also set a restore point prior.

I have been running ME with an unofficial SP from that MDGX site
for a few years. It works great. If you read their information
you will find that the parts in there are carefully chosen.
The bundle actually sets up MUCH quicker and
easier than going through the Microsoft update web site.

Like the other poster said, BACK UP your stuff so you don't get
"caught out".
Old hard drives or CDs work good for backups of the build files
and drivers you had to collect. Using a drive image copy program
you could even put a completely working system onto an old
drive that is too small for actually doing the install itself.
(like a clean install with a directory with zip archives of installers
for basic tools)

I find this to be a good use for old 400 Meg drives!

My main working drive is a little old 5 Gig that makes
maintenance MUCH quicker and easier!

Windows key, Run, SCANREG /OPT /FIX

I update and run virus scan to scan it all.
Update and run spyware killer.

I delete various junk files, cookies, recent web pages,
those "recent" file pointers, temp files cleanup misses.
then run the disk cleanup which cleans out the recycle bin etc.

Scandisk deepest mode.

Defrag

I shudder to think how long this would all take if I was still
using a 40 Gig or a 120 Gig as my main drive!

I don't see the sense in having those on the online machine.
I COULD plug them in as a second drive, readily, but
just feel no pressure to do that.

I have several drives between 4 Gigs and 7 Gigs all
image copies of my fully working system, so that
even if the worst happened I could swap drives
in about ten minutes and be fully operational again.

I haven't had to, but I'm ready!

Will MS pull the plug for ME updates on their update site later this
year?

Some of the MS "fine print" implies or states something like that.

Beyond just not making new updates, going stagnant, will
they make the updates no longer available?

They seem to distinguish between security updates and
other updates. Some of the wording implies that updates
not for SECURITY purposes will be the first to cease.
Can one of the MVP's verify this distinction and availability?

I have a concern about the MS collection of ME certified DRIVERS.
Will they or have they become no longer available?

Has there ever been a CD of ME certified drivers?

Is the ME update CD absolutely and totally not available
from Microsoft?

Most spyware killers and virus scan software
expect that you have already installed all of
the security updates first.

Reasonable, but possibly problematic if the
updates are no longer available.

I surely like the 'Bee" in Beatson, Mike, it definitely "stings". <H>.

Hello:

Is the MDGX SP just a collection of the standard Microsoft updates, or is it
some customized collection of updates?

Should a user apply either the MDGX SP *or* the standard MS updates, but not
both?

Or should both MDGX *and* MS be applied? If so, which should be applied
first, and which should be applied second?

Thanks in advance.
