Deal with phishing attacks, viruses, and messages from unknown and suspicious senders
All of your MSN, MSN Hotmail, and Windows Live Hotmail e-mail messages are given a Sender ID (An e-mail industry initiative championed by Microsoft and other industry leaders as a technical solution to help counter spoofing, phishing, and other deceptive e-mail practices. Mail checks the Sender ID of all e-mail messages coming in to MSN, Hotmail, and Windows Live Hotmail accounts to help determine whether or not they're from a legitimate sender.) check when they're received. Your messages are also scanned for viruses (A program that can harm your computer or access your private information.) before you open them. If a message fails the Sender ID check, the message may be classified as being from an unknown sender (The sender passed their Sender ID checks, but is not in your contact list.) , a suspicious sender (The sender failed their Sender ID checks, and the message may be spam or fraudulent.) , or as a suspected phishing (Falsely claiming to be a legitimate business in order to send you to a fake website, or scam you into giving out private information, which is usually used in identity theft.) message. Messages may also be classified as a threat if they contain images that link to external websites.
If a message is or may be a threat, a warning is displayed in the header bar when you open the message or view it in the preview pane.
Click to expand: Deal with a suspected phishing message
When a suspected phishing message is detected, the images, links, and content of the message are locked and, for your safety, can't be accessed. In the message header, next to Suspected phishing message, do one of the following:
a.. To delete the message, click Delete.
b.. If you don't think that the message is fraudulent, click Unblock message. This may leave you at risk from a phishing attempt, and isn't recommended.
Deal with a message that contains a virus
If Windows Live Mail detects a virus in a file attached to an e-mail message and is unable to clean it, the warning Attachment contains a virus appears in the message header. For your safety, the infected attachments are removed and replaced with blank files. Removed attachments can't be opened or recovered.
Deal with a message from a suspicious sender
In the message header, next to Suspicious sender, do one of the following:
a.. To add the sender to your safe senders (A list of e-mail addresses and domains whose e-mail you want to receive and that you don't want marked as junk e-mail.) list, click Allow sender.
b.. To delete the message and block any further messages from the same sender, click Delete and block.
Deal with a message that contains blocked images
Some e-mail messages contain images that are linked to external websites and may present a threat to your computer if you click them. Windows Live Mail blocks these images from appearing. In the message header, next to Some images in this message are not shown, do one of the following:
a.. To display the images, click Show Images.
b.. To delete the message and block any further messages from the same sender, click Delete and block.
Deal with a message from an unknown sender
In the message header, next to Unknown sender, do one of the following:
a.. To add the sender to your safe senders (A list of e-mail addresses and domains whose e-mail you want to receive and that you don't want marked as junk e-mail.) list, click Allow sender.
b.. To delete the message and block any further messages from the same sender, click Delete and block.
Notes
a.. If an e-mail message contains more than one threat to your computer, the most serious threat is displayed first. When you've dealt with that threat, the next most serious threat is displayed. To scroll through all the threats related to a particular e-mail message, at either end of the message header, click the arrow buttons.
b.. Sender ID and virus protection are only available for MSN, MSN Hotmail, and Windows Live Hotmail accounts. Sender ID and virus protection aren't available for POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3. An e-mail protocol used to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over an Internet connection by e-mail providers such as Gmail.) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol. An e-mail protocol that allows you to manage e-mail messages on a server. You can review headers, create or delete folders and messages, and search your e-mail remotely without downloading it. Used for e-mail accounts such as Microsoft Exchange.) e-mail messages at this time.
