I'm glad I use Windows

I am a big fan of Netflix and love the streaming Instant queue. According

to their own site, Netflix has no plans at the moment to support the Linux

OS, so sorry Ubuntu users, you are again out of luck. How to Wiki explains

a "work around" on their site, but man, you have to go through a bunch of

hoops and hurdles and run VM to even come close. Even if you can get it to

work, according to the article, video playback may be choppy. I even

looked on Google to see if I could find other alternatives, but didn't find

anything worthwhile.



I WAS going to try installing Ubuntu on an older computer I have that meets

the Ubuntu requirements, but after seeing so many things I couldn't do with

it, I decided against even bothering to try.



I am so glad I use Windows.

I have a music system for that. Don't see much point in trying to

duplicate it on a computer.

I'm well aware most of the difficulty I have with Ubuntu is just my

inexperience with Ubuntu, especially when it comes to having to create/edit

some of the configuration files to get certain functionality. Besides the

Netflix thing, there isn't a printer driver for my HP printer. This is a

known issue. Another area is the ability to remote into another computer

like I can with Windows. I use remote access and remote desktop to run my

office computer from home. Nest is to be able to use a dual monitor setup

with different programs running on each one. Actually, I use 4 monitors and

can run separate programs on each. Or I can combine them into one desktop.

I have not seen anything like this in Ubuntu. Not that it's not there, but

I have not been able to find it on the computer in our office we are using

to test Ubuntu. Automatically discover and configure new hardware and

wireless devices. Devices that aren't in the driver database can be

extremely hard to find and configure. We have found that the NIC we had in

the Ubuntu box is still unsupported. We are using a virtual copy of that

computer running Windows 7 on it. That is, both computers started out

having the same hardware configuration. When we installed Windows 7, it

installed all of the hardware perfectly the first time. We didn't have to

search for drivers and there was nothing we had to do to have everything

working with the hardware. . When installing Windows XP, we had to locate

the driver on the web and transfer it over using a thumb drive since it was

not able to connect to the Internet. With Windows 7, it was no issue.

Windows 7 installed the driver during the initial install. There appears to

be no driver for Ubuntu at all for the NIC. We had to go out and purchase a

new card for the Ubuntu machine.



Ubuntu looks slick. It is clean and appears to be user friendly, but that

is just the surface. After getting everything to work, it did work. But

there were still things we had to do that Windows did completely

automatically. Network discovery and configuration for one. With Windows 7

it was all done by answering a coupe of questions. Windows did the rest.

In my humble opinion, Ubuntu is just not for the majority of home computer

users. Hell, most still don't know how to set the damned clock on their 35

year old VCR. Compiling files and playing with command line interfaces just

isn't something most people will understand. That, again in my opinion,

makes Windows 7 much more user friendly, and yet, if you do get into

configurations and settings, like me, again Windows 7 makes sense. I cannot

recommend Ubuntu for the majority of users just because it takes more

knowledge than most users possess. Windows makes things easy.



Like I said, most of this may just be my inexperience with Ubuntu. Over all

though, I still have to say that as for most computer users, Windows 7 is

still the best out there and my statement stands. I'm glad I use windows 7.

I'm definitely more productive with it. Unlike one other poster on this

group, at least I will admit my ignorance.

Oh brother, really, use Winders for what you absolutely HAVE TO and do

the rest in Linux. No-brainer.. And, "so many things I couldn't do with

it" like what compared to Winders and your needs? ONE problem does not

make Linux unusable. I'm having a hard time believing you as I use both

Win7 Pro and Linux, so please qualify your statement..

You got that backwards. In fact, why even use linux at all as Windows 7

will do everything anyone needs to do on a computer...everything!

Yup, pretty much everything for the general user, another no-brainer and

I didn't say it wasn't. I said I use them BOTH for my needs and THEY

BOTH serve me well. Thing is so does Linux do everything for the GENERAL

user, but in a more secure way. Ya just can't get over the FACT that

Winders is very unsecured can you? I don't dare do much more than listen

to ripped music, play a few Windows games, and the like in Winders, or

maybe edit a few photos. I have had to clean too many WINDERS machines

as a result of WINDERS written malware/viruses. If I need to do

research, and such, I reboot to Linux so as not to run across a hacked

trusted site thus catching nasties intended for Winders. Get over it, ya

just can't catch Winders viruses in Linux, cuz, well, they are written

FOR WINDERS! LOL What a puts, as you know jolly well what REALLY goes on

with viruses, malware, Trojans, and the like with Winders, yet you try

to deny the very well KNOWN TRUTH. What a crack-up. ..Having to clean

even Win7 machines of malware(etc) pretty much seals it for me as far as

doing ANYTHING security related in Winders, nope, I'll boot to Linux

every time. Oh, and no "snip" as a "public service" so people can jolly

well see YOUR foolishness.

Ubuntu does include a program called rdesktop that will remote

desktop into a Windows box. Remoting INTO the Ubuntu box

though requires some VNC program, because it's not Windows.

I don't know about 4 monitors, but I have a dual-monitor setup

and set it up using the display properties GUI and not with

any manual editing of files. I've got an integrated nVidia

card and am add in nVidia card. I can use both video adapters

each with a monitor and use it as two separate desktops, or

how I have it now is the integrated disabled, and two monitors

plugged into the better add-in card. This config is one large

desktop across both monitors.

And the 'upgrade' to Vista forced many to need to upgrade

other h/w too. A NIC is pretty cheap.



That may sound like a cop-out, but if you think about it, most

people aren't constantly adding/changing new

hardware......especially on a notebook. A USB flash drive

and/or camera are probably the most common thing to be

plugged/unplugged, and that isnt an issue.

So, when all is said and done and you've had trouble getting

your Ubuntu experiment working, once it is running, what can't

you do with it ? (Other than run some propreitary Windows s/w,

like a CRM/ERP package or something like that.)

I have an up to date antivirus on my machine. My Windows machine doesn't

get infected. My Windows machine is very secure. Maybe you just don't have

a clue how to use a computer properly.

So you have to clean Windows machines? Sounds like you either don't have an

antivirus program on your machine or you have one and are negligent with

updating it. Another possibility is that you visit questionable sites,

download whatever asks you to download. Maybe you are very foolish with

computers. In that case, you are better off with Ubuntu. Since very few

people actually use that piece of crap Ubuntu, nobody writes viruses for it!

Mostly, Ubuntu was written by geeks for geeks who can't get laid and are

I don't know what your problem is, but you are a typical windroid. Anyone

who does not use a computer the way YOU use it is a nut job. If you are

happy with what you have, that's fine. I don't quite see why you don't

feel the same way about what I do. I do a lot of productive work using

Linux. I eschew MS for several reasons. I'm not into using my computer

for a sound machine - the sound card will not support an eight channel

noise machine - so what? I'm not interested in that. BTW - after you tire

of your eight channel noise, drop by and I'll let you listen to the pipe

organ.

as good as its data base which is updated AFTER viruses are in the wild

infecting machines.
