win2000 and flash player 10?

B

Beyond X

I encounter websites that ask to install a newer version of flash player

(10) to view vido/picture/sound. When I tried to download it and install

it, I got a small window popping up to tell me:

"Operating System Error 16263.201.355 ---

My system consists of Win2K-sp4, Int.Quad Duo, 2GB Ram, screen res

1024x768, satisfying required setting for FP10. (I installed both IE6

and Firefox 2.0)

What am I missing? please help.

Google that error number, and there are a ton of links to others with

similar issues. Maybe one of them will have an answer.

Raises a question actually. Whenever this has happened to me and it

appears I need an update I've always bailed out and gone back to the

software source (Adobe etc) to get it rather than do it as a drive-by.

I presume the message normally comes from the flash-player itself rather

than the website being negotiated but I've felt it might be possible for

a website to fake one of these and thereby get you to download/run some

malware. Is that possible or just paranoia?

Probably both but nothing wrong with that.

Have you tried downloading Flash from http://adobe.com? I downloaded two

different Flash installers. One for IE6 and other for Firefox v3. I had

no problems. I never tried downloading and installing through IE6's

ActiveX controls though.

Get it directly from adobe, I don't trust flybys as they maybe malware

traps.

I have 10 running on W2kP quite fine, its Quicktime that gives my 2000

fits, so i just run Firefox off a USB stick in Linux and that way get a

modern desktop with the latest codecs. Still do most of my work in 2000

probably always will as I can't be bothered porting my Xnews settings

over but for Mozilla products it is easy, just copy from profile folder

to profile folder in each.

You might also look into tools that allow you to change the default

user agent like the add on for Firefox and get rid of IE, 'specially

for running 2K after July 13th.
