Internet explorer icon gone

Michael

In Win Vista 64-bit, the desktop Internet Explorer icon has disappeared. I
would like it back, and not as a shortcut, but the way it was. I have browsed
for a solution, and many suggest this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

4. In the right hand pane, double-click
{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} key.
5. Enter dword value as 0 to enable the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop.

It does NOT work in my system

Help, please. Thank you.

Hi Michael,

Try using the download I have for the IE icon on the desktop. Be sure
to refresh the desktop afterwards to see the new IE icon.

Michael--

What happens when you run SFC, System Restore, or Startup Repair?

What happens when you do the other steps in this MSKB?

Internet Explorer 7 Desktop icon missing
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555849

Alternatively, create and run a .REG file.

1. Open Notepad (Click Start, Run, type notepad.exe)
2. Cut and Paste the below lines. (Ignore the Start from Here and End Here
lines)

# Start from Here

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

# End Here

3. Save the file with an extension .REG and double-click it to add the
Registry value.
4. Refresh (F5) the Desktop.

Good luck,

CH

@ Brink: Merging the .reg does not solve the problem. I have refreshed, still
no icon.

@ Chad: I did the steps in the MSKB (I suspect this is what Chad's reg-file
does), no luck. I have not tried system-restore, and I prefer not to. Any
other advice...?

Thank you

I found the solution: The regkey
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel)
did NOT work for me, because I use classic start menu. Instead use
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\classicstartmenu
and alter the reg-key mentioned to 0 (from 1).... Voila!
