High usage on non paged memory pool / clustered system

Dear all,

I am suffering with high usage of non paged memory pool on my
clustered servers running on Windows Server 2003 Server R2 Enterprise
SP2. The typical usage is 100 - 110 MB. The memory pool tag MmCm is
using 50 MB of NPP.

Let's describe my setup.

I have 3-node cluster consisting of 2 HP DL 380 G5 servers and one
virtual server on VMware (this server acts as an arbiter in MNS MSCS
cluster). Both servers has 4 GB of physical RAM installed. Both
servers is using /3GB /PAE /USERVA=3030 boot.ini parameters specified.
I have clustered Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server Enteprise with SP2
running on one one. The second node has file server share clustered
resources, IIS clustered resource, DHCP and WINS clustered resource.

I have the Altiris Client Deploynment sw installed, backups are going
through Data Protector 6, we are using Mcafee Viruscan Enterprise
8.0.0. Note that I tried to stop all these services (DP, MCafee,
Altiris), without freeing any NPP memory.

Note that I have set the SystemPages registry setting to the value
50000, instead of recommended value of 0. When I tried setting it to
the 0, I ran out of free PTE's very soon.

Sometimes I encounter strange behaviour (for example of IIS service -
I had to set it to use aggressive memory allocation (not to refuse
connection when the free NPP fall bellow 20 MB, now it is t 8 MB), and
cluster service is reporting that the file share resource failed with
error 64 sometimes. I suspect the low resources symptom - low free NPP
(non paged pool). Maybe I have to remove the /3GB and /USERVA switches
from boot.ini at the file server cluster node, however, I don't know
if it will not run me in other problems related to different cluster
node config. I am not sure here.

How can I figure out, what driver/sw is allocating so much of NPP
memory? And what is best practice for configuring the boot.ini (can be
different among cluster nodes) ?

Just for clarify: I have cca 1000 users/mailboxes, typicaly 400-500
SMB/MAPI sessions concurrent.

Because Exchange Server uses the /3GB switch as it scales up, the Exchange
Server computer cannot efficiently use more than 4 GB of RAM. Exchange
Server does not support instancing, Physical Address Extension (PAE), or
Address Windowing Extensions (AWE).

Heavily stressed file servers should not use /3gb switch. The /PAE switch

MB of NPP?

For exchange, as stated in the KB:
Exchange Server does not support instancing, Physical Address Extension
(PAE), or
Address Windowing Extensions (AWE).
=>remove the /PAE on exchange

PAE is useful if you have more than 4G and application that can use it (like
SQL).
You would remove PAE on both node, it's useless for you.

You can have many entries in the boot.ini, choose your default. You will be
able to change manually at each boot.

Start by removing the /PAE on exchange and /3G /PAE on the filer.
This would correct your issue at the root.

Okay, If I understood good, you are recommending to use different
boot.ini configuration for each cluster node (exchange, file server),
aren't you?

I am slightly confused of the /PAE, especially from this:

Until recently, it was a best practice to disable PAEs with the /NOPAE
switch on Exchange servers where the /3GB switch was set. This
recommendation existed because Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000
Server had not been tested with the PAE kernel, nor was the PAE kernel
necessary on an Exchange server. New hardware and software
capabilities now require the PAE kernel to be loaded. For example,
servers with Lindenhurst or Twincastle chipsets require the PAE kernel
to be loaded, otherwise not all installed memory will be recognized.
In another example, Windows Server 2003 SP1 supports hardware-enforced
DEP. This functionality cannot be enabled if the PAE kernel is not
loaded.

As a result of testing by the Exchange Server product team, it is now
a best practice to allow the PAE kernel to load on an Exchange server.
Therefore, the /NOPAE switch is no longer necessary unless you are
troubleshooting a specific issue where the PAE kernel is suspected as
a contributory factor. On some servers running Windows Server 2003
SP1, the /NOPAE switch may be ineffective because hardware-enforced
DEP, which is enabled with the /NoExecute switch, will override this
instruction to disable PAE. If required, the /Execute switch can be
used to disable the PAE kernel.

My opinion is that you do not have more than 4G, so your systems don't need
the PAE.
As mentionned in your link, some server with hot-memory need the PAE.
Do you have hot-memory feature?

I would just remove the /PAE to let windows load it if needed.
The most urgent things is to remove the /3G on your filer.

Until recently, it was a best practice to disable PAEs with the /NOPAE
switch on Exchange servers where the /3GB switch was set. This
recommendation existed because Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000
Server had not been tested with the PAE kernel, nor was the PAE kernel
necessary on an Exchange server. New hardware and software
capabilities now require the PAE kernel to be loaded. For example,
servers with Lindenhurst or Twincastle chipsets require the PAE kernel
to be loaded, otherwise not all installed memory will be recognized.
In another example, Windows Server 2003 SP1 supports hardware-enforced
DEP. This functionality cannot be enabled if the PAE kernel is not
loaded.

As a result of testing by the Exchange Server product team, it is now
a best practice to allow the PAE kernel to load on an Exchange server.
Therefore, the /NOPAE switch is no longer necessary unless you are
troubleshooting a specific issue where the PAE kernel is suspected as
a contributory factor. On some servers running Windows Server 2003
SP1, the /NOPAE switch may be ineffective because hardware-enforced
DEP, which is enabled with the /NoExecute switch, will override this
instruction to disable PAE. If required, the /Execute switch can be
used to disable the PAE kernel.

I think not, or, at least I don't need that feature. I will remove
the /PAE and try to remove /3GB from file server.

If it will not help, I will try to play with /USERVA setting, maybe I
will try the 2900 value.
