Installing a winXP driver on a win98 machine...

B

Brad Pears

We have a shared printer hooked up to an older Win98 desktop machine. The
printer is an HP PSC 2210 all-in-one. When an XP user attempts to add a
printer and
specifies the shared printer location i.e. \\computername\printername they
are then asked to select a driver etc.... Windows XP does not include a
driver by default for the PSC 2210 so it means the user has to use the "Have
Disk" option and locate the driver CD or install from a network location.

Is there a way I can add the XP driver to the WIn98 machine so that the
driver will be automatically installed on their XP machines when they add
the printer?

I am thinking it can't likely be done (the reverse of a win98 user adding a
printer from an XP machine) but maybe I am wrong??

Thanks, Brad

an XP driver will definately not work with win98...
nor will a win98 driver work with XP

See if this helps, on an XP machine:
Click Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
Double click "Add Printer".
Click Next.
Click "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer" > Next.
Click "Browse for a printer" > Next.
Select the printer in the "Shared printers" pane and click Next.
Click "Yes" in the "You are about to connect to...." popup message.
Click "Yes" to make it the default > Next.
Click "Finish".

Right click on the printer in "Printers and Faxes".
Click "Properties" in the popup menu.
Click Sharing tab > Share This Printer > Additional Drivers button.
Select the checkbox for Win95, 98 and ME and click OK.
Browse to where the driver is located and select it.
Follow the prompts to finish adding the drivers.

Why not just copy the driver file to some convenient place on the
Win98SE machine, and when the XP machine wants a disk, point it at the
file?

That statement is not quite accurate.
Drivers can be made to be compellable with other operating systems.

I have read instances were a 98 or ME drivers was used on windows xp
without any problems. The software didn't have xp drivers. The
old drivers still worked. You have to Windows xp to allow it to
install.

Although win95/98/ME can generally use the same drivers

and XP and Win2k can generally use the same drivers...

since XP and Win2k are NT-based systems...

and win95/98/ME essentially DOS-based systems...
there is little chance the drivers could be interchangeable...
I'm quite sure there may be a few exceptions...
but it's rarely the case

For the recorded.
I had xp sp2 at one time.

I would not of said that if it was not a fact.
Some windows 98se/ME drivers can work on xp (Not sure about 2000)
but you have to tell Windows xp to allow the install of the driver.
I did not say all.

One of my printers didn't have an xp driver but I used a windows 98se
driver without any problems. Same with a sound card I had to
replace.

Windows Xp has has generic drivers that will sometimes work with some
outdated equipment where no drivers was made. Microsoft did real
good in that area (Not so good with vista) to encouge people to
upgrade to a xp.

I once got a modem to work on Win2k using a Win98 driver...but that was
just that one time.

As far as 'generic' drivers , XP does very well there...especially with
video cards.
I've generally gotten most video cards to work at full color and resolution
with the 'generic' windows drivers...
IIRC: The Intel on-board video did require the mfg's drivers though

I had a Diamond ViperII Z200 that I moved from a 98SE machine to an XP, I used
Win2K drivers for it and it worked great.

I concer with your thoughts on this philo and it is bad enough at least for
me to have a dual-boot with 98SE and XP Pro. on 2 hard drives and still
encounter dll h_ll and other problems. It was especially bad after I
installed VPN access to the XP side I had no idea the 98SE side would say oh
--- we need that also and since my work identitiy got compromised ---- then
it was --- bye, bye computer till September 21, 2007 when the investigation
of computer sabotage wraps up at Painted Sky Elementary in Albuquerque, NM.
BTW, I am now on paid leave and so I am fairly sure they no longer expect me
since I became a victim of in this case, business identitiy theft. I am now
taking my correct thyroid medicine and am much calmer. Wow, it took the
medical community 17 years after my radiation to figure out I had thyroid
issues that mirror bipolar disorder when you don't get enough medicine or too
much in my previous postings -confirmed by Dr. Jeff -- last name left out to
protect his identity at the clinic in Albuquerque on 21 of August-- the 125
mcg dose really messes me up and makes me really hyper and the 112 mcg dose
of Levothyroxin is just right. It is amazing how a small little pill with a
glass of water --- 30 minutes + before eating makes all the difference in the
world.
