Best way to associate files when they get mixed up

I was wondering with all the different audio players that compete for some of
the same extensions which ones are the best to use and why? Thanks in
advance for any and all replies.

have you ever just tried kickin' back and trusting your ears????
you 'sound' (xcuse the er', ) like you have problems enjoying simplicity.
just listen to the music and stop fussing about 'brand-names' 'quality'
and all of the other traps that manufaturers want you to work your
knickers-in-a-knot about........ capiche????

for what its worth,, there are ppl starving on this planet, and all you
want to do, is know what the best sound-system is...... sheeesh!!!
do you plan on taking all of this knowledge to zimbabwe?? are you
about to embark on a quest to ethiopia armed with the latest and greatest
info about computer products?? (even though they got no electricity?)
(can just picture you walking into a refugee camp amongst the starving
and dying,, with bible in one hand and a cd in the other..... )
you are a mystery dan..... but you do make me laugh.

Trial seems the only way so long as you keep a
record of the results. I have found:
(a) Not the newest but the second newest version
of an app (that runs under Win98 or your preferred OS)
is usually the most trouble-free and of widest application.
(b) I have found RealPlayer best for most of my
personal needs.

The simplest way to avoid "extension hell" is to open the
application and then the file instead of clicking on the file in
explorer (or whatever) and being at the mercy of the shifting
associations. If you hear any serious difference in quality
(doubtful IMO) just junk the players that suck.

You might consider getting VLC, it's free and plays almost
everything.

You could also get an audio converter software and convert all
your files to the same format at the bitrate which works for
you. If you do that, do NOT convert from ogg to mp3 directly,
for instance, always convert to WAV first and then to the final
format.
