OT: Vista update

[Heirloom]

To those interested,
The new notebook with Vista Home Premium is working just fine for my
wife. It took quite a while to remove all of the "trial crap" that came
installed, but, that is almost complete.....I only need to remove a few file
and folder leftovers and do some manual housekeeping in the registry.
Overall, she is impressed with the OS and the system. Personally, I like XP
better (mainly because I am used to it).....Vista seems to be a bit
"AOL'ish" with all the 'eye candy' and has a number of 'nag' messages from
the PC Health feature. i.e., it did not recognize the backup I made from
Acronis to an external USB HD.
Bottom line, the wife likes it.......if the wife is happy, everyone
is happy.
Heirloom, old and now have two machines to
maintain <g>.

Do you have the two machines networked together? If so did you have any
problems doing so?

As for the "nag" messages, welcome to the world of UAC, not that I think
that that is a bad feature although perhaps a little "over-done".

Hey Mike,
No, I didn't even attempt to network the XP and Vista machines
together. I do have them working off of the same router, a Linksys
ethernet. I was going to set up a wireless network, but, the needs of the
wife were not such to justify it.
I really don't need the two machines 'talking', I recently purchased two 4G
and one 2G pen drives, so, if I need to move anything from one machine to
the other, they are quite handy, plus, the wife can use one to backup all of
her pictures and 'goodies' for safe keeping.
BTW, will the older version of jv16 Power Tools (1.30.195) work
with Vista Home Premium?? I have been told that Spybot S&D is okay and I
am still wondering about Crap Cleaner with Vista.....any info on those?

Coward <vbg>. Personally I've found Vista's networking to be more of a
black art than say XP despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary. Vista
<-> router either wired or wireless isn't a problem but I've had quite a
few problems Vista -> XP (the reverse has been fine) and as for Vista to
my two NAS boxes, well that's another story altogether and despite knowing
what "should" fix the problem it doesn't fix it reliably here and is the
main reason for what follows.

Sorry, I haven't a clue. It's not a tool I use very often, much like
Vista for which I have yet to find a good reason for using although I
appreciate that some seem to love it. I've currently two Vista Ultra
boxes here unopened together with a third Ultimate key I got as a "thank
you" for testing and all three have yet to be activated on any system.
Until now I've run under the 30 day pre-activation period and then when it
has started nagging wiped the system. I think I will probably reinstall
and activate a copy on my laptop to have a reference machine when trying
to help others but at the moment I'm not inclined to install Vista on my
two main production boxes, even as a multi-boot.

Pleased to hear the new Vista box is ok. Be interested to hear how fast
generally (especially file transfers) and how much disk churning goes on.

CCleaner 2.00.491 beta (latest) is fine if you run as administrator (r click
the s/cut icon-properties-compatibility-check run as admin box. Then it will
clean properly.

That's good to know about CC, thanks. Also, good to know about the jv
stuff. If the Reg cleaning part of it doesn't work, then the rest probably
won't either. No probs, it takes a little longer, but, I can clean the Reg
myself (end up doing that anyway, for the most part.

I'm going to put Spybot on the notebook this evening, it needs another icon
on the desktop <g>.

I've given up on the Adaware 2007 and the rest. I didn't like the prods to
dl'd Adwatch for the free version even though it didn't have it and a
variety of other 'commercial' interests they seemed more interested in.

I did find something helpful for Vista this evening....if you get a message
about needind 'Admin rights' to run a proggy, (even though you are logged on
as Admin!!!), you can simply find the .exe file for the proggy in Windows
Explorer, right click it and choose 'run with Admin rights'.....works like a
champ. I was having trouble getting Spybot to run Immunize and a couple of
other items, until I discovered that. Must be what you were talking about
with the CC on the shortcut.??

I've got three to look after <g>

Glad to hear that Charlotte is enjoying Vista, I still want it <g> I think
that the nags finish when it knows how the machine is used, but then again
I could be wrong but I would have assumed that when you have installed all
that you need there would be no need to nag anymore. I'm waffling because
I don't know what I'm talking about so don't listen to me <vbg>

I'm busy at the moment sorting out my shopping site having problems when I
want to add anything to the list but I think I've found a workaround <g>

I gave up on Ad-Aware 2007 and un-installed it and put back a copy of SE.
Like you I don't think it should download stuff that the free version
isn't even allowed to use plus I had a few problems when it updated and
apparently didn't like it so closed down :-(

Be wary of using Immunize and TeaTimer in Vista, 'loom.
Vista still has bugs and there is a MUCH larger percentage of Vista
Users posting to the WU newsgroup about updating issues in relation to
other Window OSes..
A *** MUCH *** larger percentage.
