USB External Multi card readers question

Some of them come with the drivers for W98. And some of them have USB
ports on them.

My question is: does this allow you to read thumbdrives that don't
come with W98 drivers? Obviously they'd have to be formatted in Fat 16
or 32.

As a second question (and even though it's not W98 related) has anyone
used one of these with Linux? Specifcially Suse.

No. That USB port is just an USB port.

In order to get USB support for Windows 98 S.E. --- not generally available
in original Windows 98 today --- you usually have to download and install the
driver from the manufacturer's website before the flash (thumb) drive will
work. I have not yet used Linux but it is on my list of things to do as well
as buying a modern Apple laptop sometime next year.

So basically it's just a pass-through to replace the port used on the
computer? Dang. It would have been nice if it read thumbdrives.

I have an Asus P5PE which came with the W98 drivers for the onboard
USB2.0. But you're right that I need individual drivers for each
Thumbdrive. It would have been nie to find something that would
eliminate that. According to the Suse NG the readers work just fine.
If worse comes to worse I can use the Suse box to transfer files over.

Thanks for all the input.

You could always try the universal driver by Maximus Decim. Requires USB
2.0, uninstalling ALL previous USB drivers, and install the mod. Latest
version is 3.1 I believe - Can get it several places > Axcel216/MDGX, MSFN.
etc. - look for NUSB31.EXE

Haggard:

Try the unoffocial "universal" USB driver for W98 available here:

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

Discussion:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605

It works with both USB version 1 and 2 and supports most kinds of USB
"Mass Storage" dvices. I,ve used it with a variety of flash drives and
even a digital camera.

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a try if/when I have to re-install
W98. Right now if I have to transfer any files from a non-W98 drive I
can copy them to a supported drive via my Suse box.
