All CD Drives lost in Explorer but not device manager

J

JR

Win2kpro - fully up to date - 4 cd drives on 2 ide channels, m and s.
Allocated P,Q,R,S letters. All of a sudden (and haven't deleted things
lately!) there are

NO cd/dvd roms shown in windows explorer
No cd/dvd in management. Removable storage shows drives with red x
device manager shows drives correctly
Drives work in DOS (duel boot)

Unistall and search new hardware rediscovers drives, but with exclamation
mark on them

message is

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)

All drivers there, latest version and copied from backup in case
(cdrom.inf/cdrom.sys and a .dll)

Lost for ideas. Any clues please? I do NOT want to reinstall on this
complicated setup. (nothing added since drives worked!)

MANY, MANY THANKS. Did not find that in my search. Worked fine and would
seem to have been an update to Clone CD - but odd, as used a registry backup
from a month ago to test (when cd's fine) and still same problem. Anyway,
fixed now and 20 hours to rebuild saved. many thanks
again........but......another problem posted ages ago with no response you
may be able to help with...

This win2k machine has a couple of 16bit applications (Corel 5 is one) and
when using the 'file open' command, there are no drive letters shown in the
drive box. If full path typed into file name box, finds file OK. All other
programs with 32 bit use a different file open box and are fine. Tried old
registries and no difference. Do you know what files/dll/reg entries control
this 16 bit open box??? Just a nuisance but would love to find what caused
it!!!!!

thanks
