I have been puzzled by this since XP days and did not have the time to pursue it. Perhaps now is the time.
I have 8GB, Task Manager Processes tab shows "89% Memory". I guess that means 89% of physical memory utilized as the Performance tab says 7/7.9GB (89%). One of the processes, Chrome 32bit is shown as taking up 902MB. I exited Chrome.
All the Chrome processes disappeared from Task Manager. However, Task Manager shows 86% memory utilized. I was expecting a decrease of about 12% (1GB out of 8GB).
I did nothing and waited for 10 minutes. There was no improvement.
The numbers do not add up. Are the numbers supposed to mean something meaningful? If they are real, how do I get back my memory?
Thanks.
