So.
Windows 8 running on an ASUS laptop.
Apparent bug in Cisco software prevents Windows 8 connecting to WLAN (802.11W problem).
So downgrade driver for WLAN card to W7 version, and PC will not boot.
Goes into Automatic Repair which cannnot fix problem. Cannot boot in Safe Mode because it appears AR is getting there first.
Had to System Restore just to replace the driver (and reinstall all the other software I've put on since the restore).
This sucks....wasted 4 hours trying to find a solution.
