Hugo award winner, writer and current president of the SFWA John Scalzi received his new computer around December 14 and at the time was interested in the start screen and "Windows Store App" mode. You can read his initial thoughts at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/12/14/tech-notes-on-the-xps-one-and-windows-8
One month later he is installing Stardock and writes "I’ve come to believe the Win 8 start screen, and the whole environment it propagates is just terrible UI for those of us who actually use their computers for work, rather than using them
just to play games and get on Facebook."
He makes several good observations about his work-style and how the "Windows Store Apps" do not work well for him. Obviously everyone is different and their needs differ, but it makes for interesting reading. Check it out at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2013/01/16/punting-the-start-screen/
