Losing Memory On Hard Drive

I recently bought a laptop with Windows 8. However over the last few days I have noticed the space on my hard drive gradually reducing when I am not adding anything to the hard drive. I noticed today the hard drive space reduced by 1gb when I emptied the
recycle bin (only deleted around 10mb of data). Is there any reason why this might be happening?
