Windows 8 - Driver letter assigned to external USB disc changes randomly after a few reebots.

My USB disc comes up with the letter 'J'. Because I have references to it with a letter 'X' I want to change it and I do that in the Computer Management tool with

the Disk Management utility.
Computer - Right click - Computer Management
Disk Manegement - Right-click the drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths
Assigne a new letter
Everything works fine but suddenly after a reboot Windows 8 loses the letter 'X' for this disc and assignes 'J' again.
I have done so with this drive for years under Windows 7 without any problems. Any idea, please what the problem might be?
