Windows 8 Main Montior Problem

After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, my main monitor has always been detected as the external monitor. I think this is because my computer was connected to an external monitor when I was upgrading. When I right click and try to change the main monitor
from Screen Resolution, the check box is gray and does not allow me to click it. When no external monitor is connected, the laptop screen is black.
Is there anyway to fix this?
