Windows update failing with 88070570 trying to update Vista Ultimate to SP1

I am trying to get my laptop XPS M1330 to update Vista Ultimate 32 bit to SP1 and then on to SP2.
All other updates have been installed successfully, but on SP1 I get "failed to install updates error 88070570" using Windows Update and 0x800288c5 with the standalone.
I can see from the web that a lot of others have had a problem, but can anyone help?
