I believe my PC has a virus ca[pable of eluding Microsoft detection. Any remedies for this?

Cannot access internet without first running a virus scan, where anywhere from 8 to 42 are found.Computer freezes frequently.Other times I can't access the Norton scan.Tried to run the Norton Eraser, too, but didn't get beyond loading it. It won't run, at all,
