why do i have a red labeled icon saying my anti-virus program is off whern mse indicates protected?

when i click on this icon it goes to windows security center and it shows that my virus protection is off. "microsoft security essentials reports that it is turned off. etc.." . on the mse screen it shows real-time protection : on my virus and spyware definitions
are up to date. i just finished a quick scan saying " no threats were detected on your pc during this scan. security essentials is monitoring your pc and helping to protect it." why do i have this red icon if mse is on?
