Why doesn't Microsoft Essentials update daily automatically & run?

Why doesn't Microsoft Essentials update daily automatically &amp run? I went to run the current security update for Microsoft Essentials &amp it shut my computer down then did not run &amp said computer at risk!! what is going on??????
