Long scan time for a "full scan" with Security Essentials

I keep having very, very long scan times for a "full scan", usually well over 24 hours. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times but keep having the same very long scan times. I am running Windows 7 Home Edition (64 bit), and here is my current
information on my current edition of Security Essentials:


Antimalware Client Version: 4.2.223.0
Engine Version: 1.1.9302.0
Antivirus definition: 1.147.581.0
Antispyware definition: 1.147.581.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 2.1.8904.0
Network Inspection System Definition Version: 18.160.0.0



Is there anything that can be done to fix this ongoing issue? Is there any other FREE security suite out there anyone could recommend that is better than Security Essentials? There has to be a better way!
