My other Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) computer has only 512 MB of RAM and Windows Update always fails to check for updates with error 8007000E. That machine has Microsoft Security Essentials Prerelease and it never installs new definitions because of a "network
or connectivity problem".

Every single Microsoft security application should update without Windows Update. There are infections that can corrupt/disable Windows Update.
