Slow opening programs after reboot of windows XP with microsoft security essentials

I have a fresh install of windows XP. I installed microsoft security essentials, which works great. I noticed that after a computer re-boot
programs are slow to open the first time. After the first opening, they open quickly. I have verified that MSE is th problem by un-installing
it and repeating the previous test. Any suggestions?
