Problem with Microsoft Security Essentials

My computer has Vista. I have been using Microsft Security Essentials for about a year &amp a half and it worked fine. But in the last few days when i either run a quick or full scan, it has been freezing my computer &amp i have to maually shut it off. I
tried removing MSE &amp reinstalling it but when i run the scan it does the same thing, it freezes the computer. What is going on &amp how can i fix it?
