initiating scan and its duration

i've scheduled a scan to take place weekly and unchecked the box requiring my computer to be on but it never engages, why is that?
additionally, when i run a full scan manually, it takes ALLLLL day, is this normal.
i have an older dell latitude laptop running vista. thank you very much.
