Microsoft Security Essentials "PC Status: Potentially Unprotected" - Program wants to run FULL scan

Every day, Microsoft Security Essentials displays "PC Status: Potentially Unprotected", for the reason that "You haven't run a scan on your PC for a while. This could put your PC at risk."
Is it normal for the program to want to run a FULL, 4-5 hour scan every day? Running a Quick Scan does not satisfy the requirements for removing the Potentially Unprotected status. Is there a way to change it so that it requires one full scan per week
instead of per day?
