I have microsoft security essentials with real time protection turned on but the red shield warning

Antivirus program

I have microsoft security essentials installed with real time protection turned on but the red warning shield is highlighted in the bar. I have security updates automatically installed - please advise. There is no other antivirus program in the list of programs
installed.
