is MSE a good replacement for McAfee Suite that i actually hafta pay for?

My computer has slowed over a couple years. i've had help to increase memory and upgraded my internet speed. the person who dealt with the memory recommended MSE noting that lately McAfee has been becoming burdensome for many computers. Seems every time
i sit at my PC, McAfee is either running an untimely scan, or automaticly updating. Not sure if i should make the switch to MSE even if it is free.
