going back to win98

R

I want to install win98 on computer that currently has XP because XP uses up
too much of hard drive (older computer used by young kids). How can this be
best accomplished. Note: Have windows 98 disk for PCs without windows.

(a) Did the computer have Win98 on it before? If not, better name it &
name the peripherals attached, so someone may say whether it is
compatible.

(b) Can you say definitively which of these you have...?...

......Quote of Badour...........
RETAIL FULL INSTALL: This CD will either upgrade W95/98 to SE or you
can install it to a blank hard drive.

RETAIL UPGRADE INSTALL: This CD will either upgrade W95/98 to SE or you
can install it to a blank hard drive however, when installing to a
blank drive, install will ask to see the qualifying system (i.e., W95)
disk(s).

OEM FULL INSTALL. This SE CD is designed to be installed to a blank
hard drive however, there is a possibility that you can trick it into
upgrading. For info, go to:
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html Be aware that if you
buy an OEM disk, it might be customized for installation on a particular
computer however, this will probably be primarily with a used disk.

UPDATE CD: This CD will only update a functioning copy of W98 to W98SE.
When MS sold them, they were $20 and came with a ProductKey. Some
venders were selling them and advising customers to use the W98
ProductKey which may or may not work--don't get stung.

RECOVERY CD: Some companies will brand an OEM CD and call it a recovery
CD. You should avoid these unless it is the exact recovery CD you are
looking for. Many recovery CDs will only install on the equipment they
were intended for.
......EOQ.............................

(c) Here are instructions...

http://www.hexff.com/win98_install.php How to Clean Install
This first has it all, but..
(a) Perhaps don't do the 2.5 swap file thing, &
(b) You may rather have multiple partitions, &
(c) Attend it's warning: Have any non-Windows peripheral drivers
available to install afterwards.

http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html
Badour's instructions.

(d) After a fresh install, you must upgrade IE to at least v.5.5 before
Windows Update will work...

.........Quote.............
After reinstalling Win98, you must upgrade to IE6 SP1 before you can use
Windows Update, yes otherwise, you should be able to access any other
web-page, including Microsoft's.

Only follow the part starting with (d) if you are like never-
ending nightmares.

Get an older version of Opera (www.oldversion.com) or latest
OffByOne, or best, both.

Get Xnews or NewsXpress (no yEnc) and one of dozens of real
email programs.

NEVER use IE/OE for ANYTHING except reading .chm help files.

Forget about Windows Update. It's a scam.
Check out http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Google if you are wondering why I am saying all this.

If this PC is newish, you will also need beforehand
(1) appropriate Win98 drivers for the display adapter
(video card) and other components,
(2) the right DOS boot floppy, which can be downloaded
free from www.bootdisk.com.

Ron Badour's web site (URL in another post) offers
complete instructions. WinXP and Win98 use
different hard disk format defaults so you need
to start with DOS FDISK to remove any NTFS
partitions and create FAT32 logical drives. If the
hard drive is larger than 130 Gb some of the
drive space may be wasted, but this does not
matter to kid users.

Actually, Maximus Decim also has one of those *universal 98SE updaters*
available [about 12 megs.]... it includes his USB, large hard drive, and
some other, uh, enhancements,, but, I think it comes WITHOUT those *let me
change your desktop to 2000 or XP graphics* found in many of those types of
files.

Yes, funny how some otherwise reasonable people think
transparent windows are SO important. Yuch.

Anyway, first time I've heard of the venerable M.D. ...

My patience wore out at the 3rd Google page... once I reached
all the Russian sites...

Many sites mention the M.D. USB patch, but the closest I could
find to a "home site" is http://www.jimmsta.com
but I don't think that's it since it does not mention M.D. by
name.

The 9xPP pack on that site is 221 MB which I find quite
ridiculous.

Is there a site for M.D.?

Thanks.

I clicked that, but haven't read through it thoroughly. I guess it's one
way to go from what I did see. Looks like it's well written-up, anyhow.
I would make a full system backup before trying it. Then, its uninstall
"known problem" would no longer matter.

But things are working well-enough for me still with IE6 SP1 installed &
fully updated. The NET can be slow or fast depending on what URL I
click. I guess all sites would be quick, if I update to DSL from my
Dial-Up. As far as viruses & such, I have my avast! & Kerio Personal
Firewall & haven't gotten bit yet. And I don't get many crashes.
(However, I rarely do anything different, & I don't travel the NET all
that much.)

As far as hard drives being over 137 gigabytes in 98SE what is the best
solution --- is it to use a program like BING to partition your drive or a
controller card or some other solution?

Hey, saw a post for one I had tried before and didn't like [and I have
tried several now]. Thought another potential should be addressed is all.

Anyway, what did you try and when?
Maximus Decim is constantly updating the, uhm, upgrades/updates so the old
"check back later it might be better" applies.
Kinda like Microsoft and its updates.. "Opps, that update broke this ... ,
so in the next round of updates we'll fix it." Meanwhile users were/are left
looking for *fixes* just so they can use their systems, or *rolling back* to
some prior point [to potentially now broken systems if it was a critical
system file or network update].

I would not replace a crucial MS system file myself, you guys
are daredevils!

Even I think SOME things should be left alone. I recommend the
exuberant site because I THINK (getting old) that I DL'd the
pack a long time ago and ran a FEW of the updates - I KNEW I
didn't need them all, 95% + have to do with IE and Office.

(And even that mainly because I find the MS site just too much
of a headache to navigate. Things MAY have changed, but the list
of semi-nonsensical code words one used to HAVE to know to find
ANYTHING in the "knowledge base" was a little too much for me.)

Since I don't use my 98 machine for the internet and only use IE
for .chm and Office for nothing - 8 years ago I had to design
and work with an Access database for a few months, but that was
on my 95 machine, and all traces of Office were removed promptly
after I was finished (except JUST THE OTHER DAY I accidentally
found a 1.6 MB MSO97V.DLL file which was STILL there - (the
bastards!) - it is gone now), I basically totally disregard the
entire update issue, and have for about 5 years.

So I actually have had no experience with the *complete* service
pack product. I was interested in M.D. who I've never heard of
before but must admit I still have to visit the sites the links
to which were provided.

After a lifetime of errors and regrets, I now REALLY try to
stick to the "if it ain't broke..." maxim.

Ha! I just visited the http://www.mdgx.com and was not a little
surprised to see it's Axcel's! I have had his huge-ass "tips and

plus a lot of it seemed a bit frivolous... (This weird
contradiction in contents added to my hesitation...)

One question remains... Why did he change the name?

Well ask him, he's over on MSFN as a forum moderator.

And yes, some of the older materials need a MAJOR rewrite.

I know about all that. He had begun to mellow in his criticisms &

devastating! I was in a cave in Saskatchewan at the time-- or I would
have demanded to know why!

| I would not replace a crucial MS system file myself, you guys
| are daredevils!

I did it only temporarily to see whether it aided in the cure of
Explorer's problems with copying incredibly large files & with the
delete of a massive number of files after IE6 has been installed-- but I
could not boot afterwards! I don't care to revisit the experience!
Probably for compatibility reasons I would have reversed the change(s)
anyhow-- even IF I could reboot & the problems were solved! I don't
suffer the problems in the normal course of my use of this machine, &
there are easy workarounds for them anyhow.

| Even I think SOME things should be left alone. I recommend the
| exuberant site because I THINK (getting old) that I DL'd the
| pack a long time ago and ran a FEW of the updates - I KNEW I
| didn't need them all, 95% + have to do with IE and Office.

I'd have to look again, but with a cursory look I didn't see that site
fiddles with critical Windows components. It seems mainly to gather some
of the actual MS critical updates into an installable package & does
some tweaking too. Still, a full system backup is recommended before
use, as it is a lot to do all at once.

| (And even that mainly because I find the MS site just too much
| of a headache to navigate. Things MAY have changed, but the list
| of semi-nonsensical code words one used to HAVE to know to find

Maybe, yea. I have all the criticals downloaded from the Windows Update
Catalog site-- but must admit I rather never have to run them.
(Actually, I may have run one of them, but forget the details.) All of
my critical installs (beyond what Compaq had put on this machine) were
done by letting the site choose which were right for my machine-- & so
long as my full system backup survives, I'll never have to do it again!

| Since I don't use my 98 machine for the internet and only use IE
